Recently, my husband and I flew to Chicago for the wedding of one of my best friends, Katrina to her beloved Charles. This was no ordinary wedding, no ordinary union of souls. This occasion was … momentous. For so many reasons.

First and foremost, Katrina is a perfect example of a woman who was steadfast and unwavering in her conviction to wait for her enchanted love. In other words, she didn’t settle. She waited patiently, even when there were relationships that were “good enough.”  Deep inside, Katrina knew that she deserved so much more than “good enough.” She knew who she was, what she offered, and what she wanted and deserved in a partner. Even though her soul mate didn’t find her when she was expecting, his timing could not have been more perfect.

Secondly, I have never in my life seen a woman who stayed as busy living a rich, full, and vibrant life as a single woman. Katrina didn’t mope in full “woe is me” mode. She prayed, she waited, and she went about the business of living her life. She nurtured her dental career, she invested in real estate, she traveled all over the world, she trained for and ran marathons, she made positive contributions to her community, she spent time being a wonderful daughter, sister, friend, and she continuously focused on self-care and self-love. Katrina was her own soul mate. She was complete by herself.

Last but not least, this union was momentous because Katrina and Charles met in such a serendipitous way.  A few years ago, Katrina was accepted into Howard University’s College of Dentistry’s Orthodontics Certificate Program. At a dental conference, Katrina hit it off with another dentist. By the end of their time together at the conference, the woman asked, “Katrina, do you mind if I introduce you to my son?” That sweet introduction was the beginning of Katrina and Charles’ new life together.

“It took a long time for it to happen
But I knew those nights I prayed
That you would send me someone who’s real
And not no one for play
I kept the faith
And didn’t worry
My nights grew longer than the days
Until one day
It really happened
Sent true love my way”
